Information on Medicare Part D

MEDICARE - Medicare is a health insurance program for people 65 years of age or older, people under age 65 with certain disabilities and people of all ages with end-stage renal disease. This program is administered by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services . Medicare currently has two parts – Part A (hospital insurance) and Part B (medical insurance). Starting in 2006, Medicare will have three parts – Part A (hospital insurance), Part B (medical insurance), and Part D (new prescription drug coverage). Part D is also referred to as MMA (Medicare Prescription Drug Improvement and Modernization Act).

Part D coverage begins January 1, 2006. It is available for all people with Medicare and will be provided through prescription drug plans (PDPs) and other Medicare health plans (MA-PDs). Part D must offer a basic standard drug benefit and may offer supplemental benefits. You must be entitled to receive Part A and/or enrolled in Part B. You must also reside in the plan's service area and must enroll in a Medicare prescription drug plan to get Medicare prescription drug coverage.

MEDICARE-MEDICAL - People who are eligible for/or enrolled in both Medicare and Medi-Cal are called Dual Eligibles or Medi-Medi. In California , people on SSI are automatically eligible for MediCal with no premiums and small co payments. Nearly 40,000 regional center consumers are considered Medi-Medi, thus will be enrolled in the new drug plan.
