Inland Regional Center (IRC) launched the third series of the groundbreaking “Parenting Workshop & Individualized LifeSkills Coaching” in February 2025, offering an eight-week program designed to empower parents and caregivers with essential skills and strategies. This initiative made possible through the Language Access and Cultural Competency (LACC) funding from the Department of Developmental Services (DDS), aims to provide valuable resources and address cultural and linguistic barriers to historically underserved communities.
Using an evidence-based BreakThrough Parenting curriculum, the workshop focuses on transforming family dynamics,” “from struggle to cooperation,” noted the consultants and program leaders Virgo and Stephen Garrett from Nasaba Family Counseling & Consulting, Inc.
While the program targets parents from the Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) community, all IRC parents, foster parents, clients, and caregivers were invited and welcomed to participate. “Breakthrough Parenting helps parents understand how children think, how they function at different ages, and how to get effective discipline through teaching what to do, as opposed to what not to do,” said Virgo Garrett.
Nasaba workshop’s approach ensures that participants gain valuable tools and skills while addressing the needs of IRC’s clients who come from diverse family structures and cultural backgrounds.
Comprehensive Curriculum and Expert Guidance
The workshop’s curriculum covers a range of critical topics, including:
- The fallacies of Permissive and Authoritarian parenting
- The strengths of Authoritative parenting
- Discipline versus punishment
- Developmental stage parenting
- The value of rewards and reinforcements
- The importance of self-care and self-compassion
Led by highly qualified professionals, participants benefit from the expertise of Virgo Garrett, M.Ed., a certified BreakThrough Parenting Instructor and Youth, Parent, and Family Life-Skills Coach, alongside Stephen Garrett, who has a master’s in Counseling Psychology and is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT).

Addressing Generational Trauma and Promoting Healthy Family Dynamics
Every workshop offers opportunities to learn something vital for your loved ones. However, the Parenting Workshop & Individualized LifeSkills Coaching offers a unique perspective on understanding and breaking the cycle of generational trauma in parenting, shared Stephen Garrett. “Parents of all backgrounds, ethnicities, races, and nationalities report this Workshop to be extremely valuable in understanding the impact of generational trauma on parenting, breaking maladaptive behaviors, and creating healthy family dynamics where children thrive,” said Stephen.
The workshop is reinforced with Life-Skills Coaching, which provides hands-on strategies for developing crucial skills in youth, including self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making,” noted Virgo. Using this approach, Nasaba aims to help participants receive the necessary practical skills and knowledge to help support their children’s overall development and independence, which is one of the main goals set by IRC.
A Call to Action for IRC Parents
For clients and parents considering future participation, the Garretts explained why it is important to join: “This Workshop is extremely instrumental for those who want to operate at their best abilities as a parent. It promotes a collaborative approach for parents who are committed to seeing their children reach their highest potential while enjoying their greatest level of independence.”
They further emphasize the practical benefits: “This Workshop highlights strategies that ease the stress and anxiety inherent in parenting. Parents will gain the skills to effectively teach, guide, and demonstrate, along with the knowledge to know when and how to apply those skills based on each child’s personal needs and functioning level.”
As the Parenting Workshop & Individualized LifeSkills Coaching 2025 final week quickly approaches, IRC encourages eligible clients, parents, foster parents, and caregivers to seize the opportunity for growth and empowerment when similar trainings becomes available. Participation in future workshops or similar trainings provided at IRC allows learning about developmental stage parenting, the value of rewards and reinforcements, and the importance of self-care and self-compassion.
