California’s wildfire season continues to be longer, more intense, and more dangerous each year. Inland Regional Center (IRC) urges our clients, families, and provider community to stay prepared and informed to protect lives, property, and peace of mind in the face of wildfire threats.
Wildfires can spread rapidly, especially in dry, hot, and windy conditions. Being prepared before a wildfire begins is the most effective way to stay safe and ensure a quick, organized response.

Here are essential steps you can take to prepare for wildfires:
- Create a Go-Bag: Pack an emergency kit with essentials such as water, food, medications, medical equipment, assistive devices, important documents, a flashlight, batteries, and a change of clothes. Include items specific to your or your loved one’s disability needs.
- Know Your Evacuation Routes: Plan at least two evacuation routes from your home. Practice these routes in advance and share your plan with trusted family or support staff.
- Sign Up for Alerts: Register for emergency alerts in your area, including Ready SB County or RivCo Ready, depending on your location. These alerts can inform you in real-time if evacuation orders are issued.
- Prepare Your Home: Remove dry brush and debris around your home. Keep gutters clean and clear flammable materials away from buildings. If possible, create a defensible space of at least 100 feet.
- Have a Communication Plan: Make sure your support network knows where you are and how to contact you in case of evacuation. Keep your phone charged and have backup chargers available.

Wildfire emergencies can be especially challenging for individuals with developmental disabilities or sensory sensitivities. Preparing in advance and making personalized plans helps reduce fear and ensures everyone is ready to act when needed.
At IRC, we are committed to ensuring that emergency preparedness includes everyone. We encourage clients, families, and service providers to use the tools available to prepare now—not later.
