As temperatures soar across California, Inland Regional Center (IRC) reminds our community of the importance of preparing for and protecting against extreme heat events. Heatwaves can be more than just uncomfortable—they can pose serious health risks, especially to individuals with developmental disabilities, seniors, children, and those with chronic medical conditions.

Extreme heat is now more frequent and severe due to climate change, and it’s crucial to take proactive steps to stay safe and prevent heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Here are some key tips to stay safe during extreme heat:

  • Stay Cool: Keep your living space cool by using fans or air conditioning when possible. If your home becomes too hot, identify nearby public cooling centers or visit a shopping mall, library, or community facility.
  • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Avoid drinks with caffeine or alcohol, which can lead to dehydration.
  • Dress Appropriately: Wear lightweight, light-colored, and loose-fitting clothing. Use sunscreen when going outside and wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses for extra protection.
  • Limit Outdoor Activity: Try to stay indoors during the hottest parts of the day, typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. If you need to be outdoors, take frequent breaks and rest in the shade.
  • Check on Others: Ensure family members, neighbors, and friends—especially those who may be more vulnerable—are safe and have access to cooling and hydration.

For individuals with disabilities or health conditions, it’s especially important to prepare in advance and know who to call in an emergency. Make sure you have an updated emergency contact list, medications stored properly, and transportation options in case relocation is necessary.

Inland Regional Center encourages all clients, families, and providers to learn more about heat safety and access resources that can make a life-saving difference.
