Fall is in the air and it’s the perfect time for a fresh start—for “turning over a new leaf.” This is exactly what Olivia, an Inland Regional Center (IRC) consumer, is doing.
Olivia is as genuine a person as you’ll ever meet. She’s thoughtful, grateful, and deeply cares for her family. Recently, she reconnected with IRC and her Consumer Service Coordinator (CSC), Devin Morris. After a meeting with Olivia, Devin set out to find her a permanent home.
Olivia had been homeless for the past 11 years, bouncing from place to place wherever friends would let her stay. Devin thought Covalda Apartments would be a good fit. Covalda Apartments were built through a partnership with Inland Regional Center, the California Department of Developmental Services (DDS), and the Chelsea Investment Corporation with funds from the 2021–2022 Community Placement Plan (CCP) to create sustainable, affordable housing for IRC clients.

Olivia applied and was accepted, but she needed help with a security deposit and first month’s rent. Devin reached out to Another Way and began the process to request assistance. Another Way is a resource for IRC’s most vulnerable consumers, providing basic needs assistance to individuals and families with low incomes.
After reviewing her request and determining that she met eligibility requirements, members of Another Way’s Advisory Committee approved a rent stipend.
Today, Olivia is smiling in the kitchen of her new apartment in Coachella. She’s proud that it’s clean and tidy. She’s excited about the food boxes coming, which she learned about through a church connection. Her CSC also set her up to receive CalFresh.
Olivia shared, “The Lord was looking out for me. I’m glad and happy to have a roof over my head now.”
Her next goal, once she is stable and set up in her new home, is to find a job. Olivia’s journey reminds us of the power in bringing resources together to help someone in need.
Who are we?
Founded in 1986, Another Way is an Inland Regional Center program that provides emergency assistance to individuals with developmental disabilities and their families in San Bernardino and Riverside Counties. Funded entirely through donations, fundraising, and grants, it offers vital support like rent, food, utilities, and health-related services—helping where traditional systems cannot. Its impact is made possible by IRC staff, volunteers, sponsors, and community members who contribute through events such as food and toy drives.
The PDF program overview also includes an Another Way Payroll Deduction Form for those inspired to give. This optional form allows employees to make regular contributions through payroll, choosing a set amount per month, per paycheck, or as a one-time yearly donation. Deductions roll over annually unless you notify in writing, making it an easy way to support individuals and families who rely on Another Way’s vital services.
