On Wednesday, April 22, 2026, the Inland Regional Center (IRC) hosted a special edition of our Coffee and Chats series: the Autism Acceptance Month Panel. This hybrid event brought together families, service providers, and community members at our San Bernardino headquarters and virtually to celebrate the experiences of individuals on the autism spectrum and to move the conversation from awareness toward true acceptance.

This initiative is created and brought to you in collaboration between the Community Engagement and the Service Access and Equity Teams.

BEYOND AWARENESS: THE THEME OF ACCEPTANCE

While Awareness is a starting point, the focus of this year’s gathering was Acceptance. This distinction is vital: it marks a shift from simply knowing autism exists to actively creating a world where neurodivergent individuals are welcomed, included, and celebrated for their unique perspectives.

The panel was designed to be an intentional space for open dialogue, where the experiences of families were not just shared, but prioritized. As the IRC continues to grow its support networks, events like these serve as the heartbeat of our mission—ensuring that every individual we serve feels a sense of belonging within their community.

EXPERT INSIGHTS AND CLINICAL GUIDANCE

The morning session featured Noemy Ruff, a Registered Behavior Technician and Lead Supervisor at Bright Horizons. Her clinical expertise provided a professional framework for understanding the diverse ways autism manifests and the importance of supportive interventions that respect the individual’s autonomy.

Noemy’s insights highlighted the value of:

  • Promoting Understanding: Breaking down stigmas and replacing them with evidence-based support.
  • Inclusion in Action: Practical ways to integrate inclusive practices into daily family life and community settings.
  • Collaborative Care: The essential link between behavior specialists, lead supervisors, and the families they support.

THE HEART OF THE EVENT: THE CLIENT PARENTS PANEL

The most impactful segment of the day was the Client Parents Panel. This session offered a rare and intimate look into the daily lives, challenges, and triumphs of families navigating the autism spectrum.

Mari Rodriguez, IRC’s Cultural Specialist, reflected on the profound engagement seen throughout the morning.

Quote from Mari Rodriguez:
Parent engagement during the panel was strong and thoughtful. Parents were open in sharing their experiences, asked meaningful questions, and actively engaged with one another, which helped foster a sense of trust and community.

The interactive nature of the discussion reinforced that these spaces are not just about learning—they are about connection. Families shared that they felt truly heard and connected, which is the primary goal of the Coffee and Chats series.

KEY THEMES: COMMUNICATION, CULTURE, AND RELATIONSHIPS

Through the dialogue between the guest speakers and the parents, several key themes emerged that will guide our efforts moving forward:

  • Culturally Responsive Support: The importance of providing resources that meet families where they are, respecting their cultural backgrounds and unique family dynamics.
  • The Value of Relationships: Relationships—both with service providers and with fellow parents—were identified as a primary source of encouragement and empowerment.
  • Clear Communication: Ensuring that information regarding services and resources is accessible and easy to navigate for all families.

EMPOWERMENT THROUGH DIALOGUE

The April 22nd event left attendees feeling supported and empowered. By creating a space for Coffee and Chats, the IRC is brewing more than just drinks—we are brewing a more inclusive Inland Empire. When families feel comfortable asking questions and receiving thoughtful, compassionate answers, the entire community becomes stronger.
